What exactly is creativity?
For a preface, this is a thought.
For the people who already know what it is, please do enlighten me.
This blog post is the result of a comment made by someone on a piece of ‘artwork’ made by someone in college, which goes on the lines of “that is really creative”. I winced. The ‘artwork’ was essentially an A3 sheet, painted black and smeared with random swatches of colors pertaining no order whatsoever.
The artist essentially, in its crude sense, conformed to ‘creativity’, the artist created something. and that something happens to be an abstract composition of colors. great. but is it creative? does it portray something interesting thats never been done before? Creativity is creating, or recreating something in a new and innovative way.
In architecture, creativity is seen very rarely. But this is probably one very good example of it:
Architect Tadao Ando created a church with the cross facing the east so that early morning attenders can see the sun rays shoot out from the massive cross along the wall creating a stunning visual. This, in my eyes, is creativity.
Another intriguing example of creativity, but little did dr. pramod think of his to-be-patients, people with chest problems can most often not breathe properly. Creative nonetheless. btw, to those who dint get it, that balloon is his substitute for a visiting card.
what exactly is creativity, to you?

your ‘architect’ scratching out is pretty creative :)
it’s v irritating when people confuse “arty” with “creative”.
nice post :)
to create is to make….to creatively make is to make something with your expression…
Hey why u scratchd out dat architect thng????;-)
creativity is what makes you turn around to look at some ordinary thing done in a different and interesting way… snt it?? :P
nice post btw
well i’ll agree with priya on this one. creativity is surely something that makes you stop and look more closely at something. The process of developing new, uncommon, or unique ideas is essentially what i believe creativity is.
and the thing is, creativity can be seen most effectively in modifications made to ordinary, everyday objects.
’nuff said.
any building designed by t’riq will surely have some innovative “tariqueee” feature.
@neha: es. sad it is.
@vishesh: got away with generalizing it, dint you?
@priya: thats perception priya, looking at something differently. i’m talking more of creating things.
@atul: hmmm.. i agree with the “the process of ….” bit.. but i have give the cup to the last sentence of your first para. Creativity is indeed making taking objects and giving them an extraordinary feature. Like tadao ando took the cross, and magnified it and made it out of light.
*bows to ze complement*
well like tadao modified the cross, thats what i meant about making modifications to everyday objects. the cross was always made of wood or whatever. this guy “modified” it and made it out of light, so to speak!
thats what i meant.
